GREEN PAJAMAS - "SUNLIGHT MIGHT WEIGH EVEN MORE" on vinyl, out now. Buy it here.

GREEN PAJAMAS-"SUNLIGHT MIGHT WEIGH EVEN MORE" (SUGARBUSH SB085), the brand new album by Seattle's finest ever Psych/Pop band. As ever I'm content to let Phil McMullen's words tell you how great this LP is:

"A new album from the Green Pajamas is always something to be celebrated, and this 16 song collection is especially welcome given that it’s all brand new material, the majority of which was written and recorded by Jeff Kelly. Not that there’s anything the matter with Joe Ross’s first written contribution since 2011, the gloriously singalong ‘Down to the Ocean’, or Eric Lichter’s excellent contributions ‘Sunlight’ and ‘Lover’s Lease’; but, well, even George Harrison only wrote one song per side for the White Album, and when there’s a songwriter of the calibre of Jeff Kelly in the band and he’s obviously hit on a rich seam, it makes sense to give him his head.

And head music is definitely what this record is all about. Readers will no doubt fondly remember the string of outrageously psychedelic albums the Pajamas recorded in the late ‘90s for what was at the time the next best thing to an in-house Ptolemaic Terrascope record label, Tony Dale’s Camera Obscura. ‘Strung Behind the Sun’ was a personal favourite, and it’s no coincidence that most of that was written by Jeff too. The new album is intentionally intended to recapture the whimsical experimental psychedelia that pervaded the band’s records of that era, and is sprinkled with appropriately exotic instrumentation, strong vocal harmonies and occasional birdsong, rainstorms and sound effects thrown in for good measure. It’s never less than glorious, and when Jeff kicks in with some of his trademark electric guitar licks it becomes absolutely outstanding: ‘Art School Blues 1979’, ‘High Tea With Miss Ava G’ and the album’s finest moment amongst a slew of fine moments, ‘Just To This’ with its middle-eastern backing, fine drumming and killer guitar break are all songs to treasure amongst a veritable treasury of songs.

Elsewhere ‘That’s Why Celia Can’t Fly’ has a Byrdsian jangle; ‘I’d Rather Be In The Sun’ is piano-led with hauntingly echoed vocals which adds a dash of melancholy – and fittingly bleeds into the next song ‘High Tea With Miss Ava G’ courtesy of the sound of a Portuguese rainstorm, which is a particularly Jeff thing to do. ‘Why Did You Do It’ has a heavier vibe and ‘I Don’t Believe You’ chills with a backwards girls school choir, and it’s left to ‘Hello, Hello’ and ‘Falling In And Out of Love’, both supremely Beatles-esque, simply great pop songs, to lift the spirits before the closing ‘Holly.

Released at a time when the world is debating the merits of vaccinations, this is exactly the shot in the arm we all need, guaranteed to put a smile on your face, make you long throw your arms around your loved ones and get us all up and dancing. Or at least nodding along, given that we’re all getting older."

SLITHEY TOVE - "BIG TOP" on SUGARBUSH is out on vinyl, 150 copies only - buy it here now.

SLITHEY TOVE-"BIG TOP" (SUGARBUSH SB083), released on vinyl for the first time is this great GREEN RAY offshoot album by much loved festival Psychsters SLITHEY TOVE. Featuring SIMON WHALEY from the band this is a fantastic mix of Psych, Progressive and a must for fans of ENGLISH bands such as Caravan and Soft Machine.

Phil McMullen from the Terrascope writes: "The past is littered with fine little bands whose names live on fondly in gig-goers memories but left no recorded legacy. ( ..) Sugarbush Records are therefore to be congratulated for having the foresight to release this wonderful LP, limited to 150 copies.

Having played festivals for fifteen years the band with Whaley, saxophonist Aaron Liddard, vocalist Doug Southall, drummer Toby Baron, and bassist Jonty Bankes, finally got into the studio. It’s taken a while to put together, but I for one am very glad that it exists at all, particularly for the excellent ‘Amazing Place’ which is the kind of complex, infectious number which would have been the highlight of any live band’s show back in the day, and ‘Road’ which (like several of the pieces on here) has a similar funky vibe to the fondly remembered Welsh band Alcatraz. If you like your festival stage to be draped in funk, jazz and space-rock, or have fond memories of bands of this ilk, then this is the kind of album you’d queue up at the merch table to purchase afterwards.

150 copies only pressed (surely this will be mega collectable?) on grey vinyl with sleeve and exclusive insert designed with DALE SIMPSON (Greek Theatre, Green Ray a.o.). To listen please scroll down a bit further for a track from the album, which is one of most varied and eclectic sounding discs we have released so far!

GREEN PAJAMAS -SEVEN FATHOMS DOWN AND FALLING on vinyl, order it here!

GREEN PAJAMAS - "SEVEN FATHOMS DOWN AND FALLING" (SUGARBUSH SB082), the first ever vinyl reissue of this classic Green Pajamas abum! Of all their great albums, his one may be the best stand-alone album, if only because it's got their greatest moment, the deliriously heart-warming love song "She's Still Bewitching Me." It's a haunting (literally), jangly pop delight, begging to be included on every mixtape you'll ever make.

Other highlights include opening track "Just A Breath Away," with its buzzing psychedelic guitar sounds; the folk-psych "My Visit With Magpie," sounding like the Strawbs crossed with late-period XTC/Dukes of Stratosphear; the insistent and catchy "Bronte Moon"; and the Beatlesque psychedelia of "Planet Love."  Overall it's a great introduction to an unjustly overlooked band; but they have a ton of great music, and you could spend hours just getting lost in their Spotify page.  There's also a decent career overview (Through Glass Colored Roses), though I find the selections diverge significantly from my home-brewed mix. This amazing set is limited to only 250 copies and we have tried to make the price as fair as possible, please remember the cost includes postage. We will also delcare a value of ony £7 for shipping outside the UK so hopefully any possible duties will be very low. Only £24.99 including shipping anywhere (UK, EU, USA and beyond!)

PUGWASH - "ELEVEN MODERN ANTIQUITIES" (SUGARBUSH SB084) buy it here on vinyl!

PUGWASH - "ELEVEN MODERN ANTIQUITIES" (SUGARBUSH SB084), finally released on vinyl. The only PUGWASH album not yet to be released on wax IS OUT NOW! This is available in two colours, 250 copies each. (Black vinyl and splatter vinyl)

"‘Eleven Modern Antiquities’ is a perfect power pop album, with a dazzling array of guest musicians, including Andy Partridge & Dave Gregory of XTC (Andy co-writes two tracks with leader Thomas Walsh), Neil Hannon of The Divine comedy, Michael Penn, Jason Falkner, The Section Quartet and Nelson Bragg of The Brian Wilson Band. The result is an amazingly awesome pop sound and best described by reviewer Alan Haber, “Walsh is a pop pundit who fuels his ideas with his deep-seated love of the pop form, whose admiration of the classic pop sound brought forth by bands like the Move and the Electric Light Orchestra and XTC knows no bounds.." THE HANGABOUTS - Illustrated Bird (SUGARBUSH SB031) buy it here on vinyl.

THE HANGABOUTS - Illustrated Bird (SUGARBUSH SB031), the fabulous classic album on vinyl by Detroit's HANGABOUTS is one of those albums that any label with a modicum of Pop sensibility would have jumped at the chance to release.

From the same gaggle of bands on the Detroit scene that we have released previously (Nick Piunti, Chris Richards and the Subtractions) this album presents the gentle Psych-Pop side of Detroit, a city normally more associated with gritty urban toughness. No, these lads have crafted a lovely Pop record that, dare I say it, would not have sounded out of place in Big Star's cannon and even reminds me of McCartney's gentler side. Hey, even Emmitt Rhodes would surely dig this record. It is a master stroke of lush arrangements, jangling 12 and 6 string guitars, layered harmonies and, best of all, some really fantastic songs. No fillers on here, and one of the best pure pop albums I have heard in years.

This is limited on vinyl to ONLY 300 copies, on see through orange vinyl. £19.99 including worldwide postage! (A total bargain!)
